- start my own "huck's honey" hive in charlottesville.

well, it's true. I've finally started the process of creating a sustainable, healthy hive which has been on my "list" for quite some time now. I'm finally living in a town that I don't see myself leaving for at least a little while. My bee mentor, aka Dad, is a commercial beekeeper turned backyard keeper -- therefore, I've grown up with bees but I've never started and cared for a hive all by my onesy. With his guidance, this learning experience of "huck's honey cville" has begun! I'm kind of digging the try-colored hive.

notes from the start:
The package that arrived was on the small side but we went with it and fed them a bag of sugar water and gave a little help with the queen exit by a pin prick. We transferred the hive to the cville location and gave a bit more sugar water. After 4 or 5 days, we went back to check that the queen was out and laying and she wasn't. The hive had dwindled and seemed a little anxious. Luckily one of my Dad's hives has been happy, healthy and was ready to be split so he brought down some brood, young bees and a queen (kind of on accident but it all worked out) with a few frames of last years honey. And that's the start in a nutshell...
